The Music Page!
Music has been an incredibly important part of my life. I remember
listening to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Hayden, on the cassette player in
the living room. This may be my earliest distinct memory. I started
playing piano before kindergarten, got a left-handed guitar in high
school, and a nyunga nyunga mbira soon after (I don't know where it is
right now).
For the Pictures
My roommate my first year in college, Joe Lewis, was in an audio
recording class, so he wanted me to write a song. I hung out in the
laundry room (interesting acoustics!) with my guitar and picked out a
song based on a conversation I had been having with Genevieve LeBaron
that day. Contrary to the face value of the song, I am not critical of
people who have "other" reasons for doing any of the good things I
mention in the song; rather I am tongue-in-cheek poking at the
"activistier-than-thou" attitude within some circles. It's a fun song
either way.
'Til Shana Tova
Mad props to Lucy Elizabeth Southern for recording her friends on lo-fi equipment, and publishing the album Banjos and Banjanes.
I wrote this rap in about ten minutes while my old housemate DJ
Hearttone was covering for a hip-hop show on KAOS. He put out a request
for some freestyle, but I decided to write it down first. I change the
lyrics before "'Til Shana Tova" to reflect the time of year ("just 3
days" was the original, I think, this recording contains the ambiguous
lyrics are "just so long")
The lovely Jeff contributes some flavor and backup vocals, as well as the drum tracks.
The Chez Cascadia Rap
I don't remember when I wrote this. It's short. It's silly. Feel free to play it on KAOS or FRO if you want.
Also from Lucy's Banjos and Banjanes.
